Understanding Decks and Patios

When deciding between a deck and a patio, several factors should guide your choice. Each option has unique benefits, costs, and maintenance requirements. Understanding these aspects can help you make an informed decision that best suits your lifestyle and budget.

Deck vs. Patio: Which is Right for You?

Cost Comparison : Generally, patios may be more cost-effective than decks. Patios are often made from materials like concrete or pavers, which can be less expensive than the wood or composite materials used for decks. However, the final cost will depend on factors like size, materials, and design complexity.

Maintenance : Decks typically require more maintenance than patios. Wood decks need regular sealing or staining to protect against the elements, while composite decks offer a low-maintenance alternative. Patios, especially those made with pavers, require less upkeep but may need occasional cleaning or weed control between pavers.

ROI : Both decks and patios can offer a good return on investment. A well-designed outdoor space can increase your home's value and appeal. However, the ROI can vary depending on material choices and the quality of construction.

Material Choices : When selecting materials, consider both aesthetics and durability. Wood offers a classic look but requires more upkeep. Composite materials are durable and low-maintenance but can be more expensive. For patios, options like concrete and pavers offer durability and a variety of design possibilities.

Climate Considerations : Your local climate plays a crucial role in deciding between a deck and a patio. In areas with harsh weather, composite decks and paver patios tend to withstand the elements better than wood or concrete.

Benefits of Professional Design

Hiring a professional designer or architect can significantly improve your outdoor project. They bring expertise and creativity to the table, ensuring your deck or patio is both functional and beautiful.

Architect Input : An architect can provide valuable insights into the design and layout of your outdoor space. They consider factors like sun exposure, views, and integration with your home's architecture.

Custom Solutions : Professional designers offer custom solutions custom to your specific needs and preferences. Whether you want a cozy nook for relaxation or a large area for entertaining, they can create a design that matches your vision.

Material Recommendations : Experts can recommend the best materials for your project, taking into account factors like climate, maintenance, and budget. Their knowledge ensures you choose materials that will last and look great for years to come.

Understanding these factors will help you make the best choice for your outdoor space, ensuring it meets your expectations and improves your home's value.

Finding the Best Deck Patio Builders

When it comes to changing your outdoor space, finding the right deck patio builders is essential. A skilled builder can turn your vision into reality while ensuring quality and durability. Here's what you should consider when selecting a builder and the questions you should ask to make the best choice.

What to Look for in a Builder

Local Expertise : Choose builders who have experience working in your area. They’ll be familiar with local building codes and climate considerations, which are crucial for ensuring your project’s longevity and compliance.

Experience and Portfolio : Look for builders with a solid track record. Ask how long they’ve been in business and review their portfolio to see examples of past projects. This will give you an idea of their style and the quality of their work.

Customer Reviews : Check online reviews and testimonials from previous clients. Positive feedback on platforms like Houzz can indicate a builder’s reliability and customer satisfaction.

Customer Service : Good communication is key. A builder who listens to your needs and provides clear updates throughout the project will make the process smoother and more enjoyable.

Questions to Ask Potential Builders

Design Process : Inquire about how the builder approaches the design phase. Do they provide custom designs custom to your needs? Understanding their design process can help ensure your vision is accurately captured.

Timeline : Ask for an estimated timeline for your project. Knowing the expected start and completion dates will help you plan accordingly and manage expectations.

Cost Estimates : Request a detailed written estimate. This should include a breakdown of materials, labor, and any additional fees. A clear estimate helps avoid surprises and keeps the project within budget.

By focusing on these aspects, you can find a builder who not only meets your needs but also delivers a high-quality outdoor space that improves your home.

Some people like to use the phrase "nature is healing." However, in some cases, nature can't heal itself alone. That's where we come in. Recently, a homeowner in Maple Grove, Minnesota reached out to KG Landscape after struggling to revitalize a back yard that was simply failing to thrive. Despite what seemed like ample sunlight and water, the turf suffered from numerous thin and bare patches that refused to improve. To determine exactly why they couldn't get this yard to flourish on its own, our client asked us to assess the yard and determine a plan that could reinstate the lush green lawn they expected for their Maple Grove home.

Seldom will you find a piece of landscaping less desirable than the unintentional water feature. That's why a recent client in St. Paul, Minnesota's Macalester-Groveland neighborhood reached out to KG Landscape. Poor drainage in their yard had begun to allow standing water to accumulate, which not only damaged the lawn but was also beginning to make its way into the home's foundation. Our assignment was to determine why this water was pooling where it was, then find a way to divert it to a safer outlet. In order to do so and to improve the health of this St. Paul lawn, our team developed a system of catch basins and underground drain pipes to capture and redirect rainwater. Additionally, we restored the damage standing water had done to the lawn with a full topdressing treatment combined with seed blankets in the most critical areas of the lawn. Upon completing the project, we successfully resolved the yard's drainage issues while also bolstering the health of the lawn.
