Front Entry Steps, Stoops & Landings

In many Minneapolis and St. Paul neighborhoods, front entry landings are often referred to as stoops.

KG Landscape designs and builds front entry stoops and steps that typically include:

  • A 4-foot-deep landing at the door for safe, comfortable entry
  • Are typically 4-6' wide, but may be even wider to fit customer entry designs
  • Properly spaced steps down to yard grade
  • A solid concrete structure for long-term durability
  • Includes frost footings to prevent moved from freeze thaw
  • Are built to comply with city code
  • Are a custom design to match the home and landscape
  • Custom stone-facing or veneer for a high-end, finished look

This combination delivers strength, safety, and exceptional curb appeal, while complementing the architecture of your home.

Well Designed Steps & Entryways add Curb Appeal

Well-designed front entry walkways, landings, and steps do more than provide access to the home — they play a major role in curb appeal throughout every season.

Thoughtful layout, proper proportions, and quality materials create an entry that looks intentional and welcoming year-round, even when landscaping is dormant.

By tying front steps and landings into the home’s architecture and surrounding hardscape, the entry becomes a strong visual anchor for the entire property, enhancing both first impressions and long-term value.

Patio Door Steps & Landings

Backyard patio door landings and steps are critical to how outdoor spaces function and feel.  KG Landscape designs back yard landings and steps for:

  • Sliding patio doors
  • French doors
  • Walkout basement landings

Our designs focus on excellent flow and aesthetic balance, ensuring the movement from your home to your patio and outdoor living space feels natural and inviting.

We carefully plan landing size, step placement, material type and alignment so the space works seamlessly for daily use, entertaining, and long-term enjoyment.

See examples of some of our many patio steps and landings projects below.  For more example of backyard patios projects, see our outdoor living space photo galley.

Replacing Low Decks with Stone Patio & Steps

Many Twin Cities homes were originally built with low-elevation decks that sit anywhere from 1-3 feet above grade. While functional in order to create a level landing out of the door, these decks inevitably:

  • Interrupt patio flow
  • Block sightlines from the house with railings
  • Create fall hazards when decks are low without railings
  • Limit how the yard can be used
  • Wood decks require a ton of maintenance
  • Can reduce privacy (can often see right over 6' fencing when decks are raised)

KG Landscape frequently helps homeowners remove low decks and replace them with thoughtfully patios with designed stone landings and steps that step down naturally to a patio or outdoor living space below.

Building a new stoop / landing out of the patio door of typically 4' deep, allows you to keep the nice level landing off the door, but then allows for a seamless transition down to patio via steps.

Patios build at yard grade can be designed with much more freedom, creativity and connection with adjacent yard spaces at grade than a raised deck can be.

Replacing a low deck with a patio, offers several advantages:

  • Opens up the yard by eliminating a raised structure
  • Removes a fall hazard (imagine a chair leg sliding off a low deck)
  • Improves visual connection between the outdoor living space and the rest of the yard
  • Creates smoother, more intuitive movement through the patio
  • Enhances access to all adjacent areas of the yard
  • Allows patios and outdoor living spaces to feel larger and more connected

By replacing a raised deck with a properly sized landing and integrated steps, the patio becomes the primary gathering space rather than an area partially obstructed by overhead structure.

Hillside Steps & Stairs for Sloped Yards

Sloped side yards are common throughout the Twin Cities and require thoughtful solutions to improve flow and functionality when moving around your yard.

Our sloped yard stair designs:

  • Provide safe, stable access around the home
  • Reduce erosion and manage water runoff
  • Integrate with retaining walls and drainage systems
  • Turn difficult slopes into functional landscape features
  • Include landscape lighting solutions

Each stair run is engineered for durability, comfort, and long-term performance.

Landscape Steps Leading Down to Lakes & Water

Minnesota’s lakes and waterways require specialized design and construction.

KG Landscape builds steps that:

  • Follow natural terrain down to the water
  • Add beauty to lakeside landscapes
  • Resist erosion and moisture damage
  • Comply with city and watershed rules and regulations
  • Blend seamlessly with shoreline landscapes
  • Include landings for rest, access, or viewing

These projects often combine stone steps, landings, and retaining elements to create safe, natural-looking access that holds up over time.

Thoughtful Designs by Experienced Landscape Designers

Great-Looking Steps Start with Great Planning.

Every KG Landscape stair and landing project is designed by an experienced landscape designer who carefully calculates:

  • Total elevation change
  • Exact number of steps required
  • Consistent riser heights and tread depths
  • Proper landing locations and lengths
  • Slight pitch in treads and landings for drainage
  • Natural alignment with doors, walkways, and patios
  • Seamless integration with adjacent yard grades

This precision ensures every riser height is the same from top to bottom, creating:

  • Smooth, comfortable movement
  • A natural walking rhythm
  • A clean, uniform appearance

The result is steps that feel solid, intentional, and refined — never awkward or uneven.

Steps Integrated into Retaining Walls

In many Twin Cities landscapes, steps are most effective when they are built directly into retaining wall or hillside landscaping designs.  KG Landscape regularly incorporates steps into:

By designing steps and retaining walls together, we ensure:

  • Proper grade control and soil retention
  • Proper drainage and erosion prevention
  • Consistent step dimensions and landings
  • A cohesive, intentional appearance throughout the landscape

Steps Type & Materials We Use

We help you select the materials that best fit the function of the project,  style of your home & perform well in the Twin Cities climate:

  • Natural stone steps (many styles & types - granite, bluestone, limestone, fieldstone, etc.)
  • Manufacturer stone steps (Cast as a single step unit - concrete product )
  • Segmental block systems
  • Concrete steps, stoops and landings
  • Maintenances free decking
  • Custom stone facing (facing steps, porches, landing with stone)
  • Pavers for stoops and landings
  • Footings - 42" + deep frost footings for concrete structures to ensure winter durability in MN
  • Floating steps design & installation

Styles of Natural Stone Steps

Cut Natural Stone Slab Steps

  • Precisely cut on all sides
  • Clean, straight edges
  • Often thermal or honed finish for slip resistance
  • Best for: Front stoops, patio steps, hillside steps, formal entries, modern style
  • Common stones: Bluestone, limestone, granite

Snapped (Split-Face) Stone Steps

  • Risers are split along natural grain
  • Rough, natural-looking vertical face
  • Tread may be sawn, thermal or natural cleft
  • Best for: Traditional homes, mixed stonework, hillsides
  • Common stones: Limestone, bluestone

Rock-Faced Stone Steps

  • Deliberately roughened vertical faces
  • Strong shadow lines and depth
  • Usually paired with smooth or thermal treads
  • Best for: Craftsman and traditional architecture
  • Common stones: Limestone, granite

Natural Cleft Stone Steps

  • Naturally split surface texture (tops and bottoms are not uniform)
  • Irregular treads, rustic appearance
  • Good slip resistance
  • We do not recommend these for front steps (harder to shovel cleanly)
  • Best for: Garden steps, informal landscapes, hillside stairs
  • Common stones: Bluestone, sandstone, limestone

Fieldstone Landscape Steps

  • Irregular shapes and sizes
  • Goes well with glacial boulders walls (its the same material)
  • Mostly common sawn tops & bottom for consistent height
  • Natural, organic appearance (when not sawn
  • Best for: Lawn steps, slopes, naturalized landscapes, steps down to water
  • Common stones: Local fieldstone

Types of Precast & Manufactured Steps

Precast Concrete Steps Units

  • Large-format concrete treads (typically 4' wide x 6" tall x 18" tread)
  • Also called segmental step units or precast step treads
  • These one-piece per step units (each step is one piece)
  • Many colors available
  • Consistent color and texture
  • Clean, uniform appearance
  • Often match paver colors perfectly by brand
  • Designed to integrate with retaining walls
  • Textured, slip-resistant surfaces
  • Durable in freeze/thaw climates
  • Often mimic the look of stone slabs
  • Faster installation than natural stone (if using irregular natural stone)
  • Less expensive than natural stone
  • Best for: Modern landscapes, hillside steps, and patio steps
  • Common MN brands: Belgard, Techo Bloc, Rochester, County

Block-and-Cap Step Systems

  • Concrete block risers with capstone treads
  • Require a tread coping stone (we never use pavers as the tread edge)
  • Flexible for curves and grade changes
  • Easy to repair or modify
  • Most often build into matching retaining walls
  • Best for: retaining wall steps, for installations where excavators cant be used

Poured Concrete Steps Faced with Stone of Brick

  • Highest end look
  • Installed over poured concrete steps, porches, landing with frost footing
  • Can customize to match other stone work on the home
  • Ideal for matching paver or natural stone used on adjacent patios / walkways
  • Provides a custom style and curb appeal
  • Build using customer tread facing
  • Often installed using mortar

Installation Styles (Applies to Natural Stone & Precast)

Dry-Laid Landscape Steps

  • Installed without mortar
  • By far the most common type of landscape step installation
  • Allows movement during freeze/thaw
  • Requires proper base preparation
  • Requires water management and erosion prevention for longevity
  • Best for: Lawn steps, hillsides, slopes, garden paths

Mortared Stone Steps & Stoops

  • Installed over concrete footing
  • Very rigid and permanent
  • Should only be installed on concrete with frost footing
  • Requires proper drainage / pitch to shed water
  • Best for: Front entry stoops, formal patio door steps / landings, high-end homes

MN Climate Considerations

In freeze/thaw regions:

  • Textured or thermal treads improve safety - better slip resistance when wet
  • Proper base gravel prep matters more than material choice
  • Dry-laid systems often outperform rigid pours in landscapes
  • All poured concrete steps should include 42" frost footing in our MN climate

Snow Shoveling Considerations

We recommend using only stone with a uniform, mostly level surface for steps that need to be shoveled regularly in winter.  Steps that are ideal for shoveling are flat, with no big varies in the surface texture.  A constant size and shape is also ideal to make snow removal easier.

For this reason, we highly recommend that our customer do not use irregular shaped or natural cleft stone steps for front entry steps and anywhere else where steps require regular stone cleaning in the winter.

Custom Railings for Safety & Style

When needed, KG Landscape can design and install custom railings to improve safety and enhance appearance.

We help homeowners select railing styles that complement their steps and landscape, including:

  • Aluminum railings – durable and low maintenance
  • Wrought iron railings – classic, decorative, and strong
  • Wood railings – warm and natural in appearance
  • Composite railings – modern look with minimal upkeep

Railings are designed to be secure, properly spaced, and visually balanced with the stair structure and surrounding landscape.

Below, is an example of a custom wrought iron modern style railing for a new set of steps we built leading out an elevated back patio door, down onto the wonderfully designed patio below.

Stone Facing for Concrete Steps, Stoops & Landings

At KG Landscape, we don’t just design and build new steps and stoops — we also transform existing and newly poured concrete steps, porches and landings by facing them with natural stone or pavers.

Stone-faced concrete steps create a high-end, custom look that elevates the entire entrance of a home. This approach allows the stonework and accent colors of the house to flow naturally into the landscape, creating a cohesive and intentional design where you interact with it most.

We most often apply stone facing to front entry steps, stoops, front porches and patio door landings  - matching the stonework on the home as well as nearby patios and walkways for a seamless finish.

Proper construction is critical. We only face concrete steps and landings that are built correctly with frost footings, ensuring long-term stability and preventing movement or failure over time. For the treads, we use full-depth coping stone, so each step has a clean, finished front edge with no exposed concrete.

This attention to detail — and doing the work the right way — is what sets our steps and stoops apart.
