Lawn Regrading to Improve Drainage
Regrading is one of the most effective ways to solve existing water problems in the yard and around the home / garage. At KG Landscape, we use several grading techniques—often combined—to control how water moves across your property and away from problem areas.
A top priority is foundation grading, to ensure water is directed away from the homes foundation. Other grading services to ensure proper drainage may include re-sloping yard areas to restore proper pitch able to effectively shed water, reshaping low spots and/or adding soil where water collects, and creating subtle swales that guide surface water toward safe discharge points. In areas near the home, we carefully adjust grades to direct water away from foundations, window wells, patios, and driveways.
We also integrate grading with existing drainage systems such as downspouts, sump pump discharge lines, and buried drain tile when needed. All grading work is finished with smooth transitions and properly prepared soil, creating a smooth surface for sod, seed, or landscaping while improving long-term drainage performance.

Regrading to Renovate Lawns & Improve Grass
We can take a bumpy old lawn and make it as smooth as it can get. Whether the lawn needs true leveling to flatten a space for playing sports with the kids, or recontouring to maximize drainage and blend all areas of the lawn together wit seamless transitions and a smooth intentional finish. We know how to get the job done right!
We use some of the best grading equipment, attachments and elevation measuring tools on the market to ensure you get the best possible results. This can involve reworking the existing soil via cutting and filling, hauling out soil and sod if needed, cutting and filling work (shaving down high spots and pulling into low areas) or loosening the lawn soils via a soil conditioner / tiller and then completely regrading to make mowing easier, and enhances overall appearance.
Soil Tilling to Prepare for Seeding or Sod
Our soil tilling service breaks up compacted ground to properly prepare your yard for lawn seeding or sod installation. Loosened, well-graded soil promotes strong root development, better water absorption, and long-lasting results.

Our lawn topdressing service applies a thin layer of topsoil over your existing grass without disturbing or regrading the lawn with heavy machinery. Topdressing helps smooth minor bumps, improve soil health, and promote thicker, healthier grass growth. (Link to Topdressing-Only page)

Regrading to Create More Functional Spaces in Sloped Yards

Add Real Value to Homes with Large Hills - Turn what can be a Negative into Positive
Many homes across in the Twin Cities Minneapolis, St. Paul, and the surrounding Twin Cities suburbs are built on sloped or hilly lots that limit how families can use their outdoor space.
Properties that lack functional yard space due to steep hills are typically valued lower than lots that have useable outdoor areas.
Professional grading allows us to reshape uneven terrain into safe, functional, and accessible areas designed for everyday family living—while improving drainage and long-term yard stability. KG Landscape specializes in grading sloped yards throughout Metro area of Minnesota, helping homeowners turn challenging hills into usable outdoor spaces for play, entertaining, and full-yard access.

Creating Spaces for Kids to Use and Play in Sloped Yards
Proper grading creates level lawn areas that are ideal for swing sets, play structures, and open space for activities like playing catch or kicking a soccer ball. By flattening and stabilizing specific sections of the yard, we make it possible for kids to safely enjoy outdoor play—even on steep or uneven properties common throughout the Twin Cities.
Building Patio and Fire Feature Areas on Hills
Grading allows sloped yards to be transformed into level pads for patios, fire pits, and outdoor seating areas. These newly created spaces provide stable, comfortable areas for family gatherings and entertaining, turning previously unusable hills into inviting outdoor living spaces. This type of grading is especially important in Minnesota, where proper slope and base preparation help patios and fire features perform through freeze-thaw cycles.
Improving Accessibility and Walkability on Steep Yards
Strategic grading also focuses on accessibility. By incorporating gradual slopes, switchbacks, and walkable transitions, we make it easier to move throughout the entire yard—rather than limiting use to the area closest to the home. Improved walkability allows homeowners to fully enjoy their property while increasing safety and long-term usability, even on steep Twin Cities lots.
Grading to improve Drainage around Pool and New Structures
Intentionally designed and professionally executed land grading around the pools and new structures (like pool houses, garages, driveway, retaining wall and patios) will direct water away from structures and hardscape areas, and will ensure smooth and finished transitions throughout the property. Proper slopes will improve overall drainage efficiency and help protect the pool area and adjacent structures from long-term water damage and erosion problems.
