Why Senior Living Centers Need Professional Snow & Ice Removal

Is the winter weather causing you concern about the safety of your senior living center? We understand your worry, as snow and ice can pose a serious risk, especially to the elderly and frail.

Our research has shown that professional snow removal & de-icing services are not only beneficial but essential in preventing these risks in senior care facilities. In this article, we look at why hiring a professional is vital for ensuring safety during the icy season.

The Importance of Professional Snow & Ice Removal

Snow and ice may be dangerous for anybody, but especially for seniors who may have mobility or health challenges. Slip and fall injuries in the elderly can have disastrous results, such as fractured bones, head injuries, or even death.

Falls are the second greatest cause of unintentional injury deaths globally, according to the World Health Organization, with more than 80% occurring in low- and middle-income nations. Adults over the age of 60 have the highest rate of fatal falls, and one out of every five falls results in a major injury such as fractured bones or a brain injury.

In the United States, falls are the most common cause of traumatic brain injuries, accounting for 48% of all TBI-related emergency department visits. The cost of treating fall-related injuries is also substantial, both for the individual and the society. In 2015 , the total medical costs for falls totaled more than $50 billion, with Medicare and Medicaid shouldering 75% of these costs.

Slip and fall injuries can result in costly lawsuits and liability claims for property owners, such as senior care centers. Slip and fall accidents are responsible for approximately one million hospital emergency room visits each year, accounting for 12% of total falls, according to the National Floor Safety Institute. With an average payout of $30,000 per claim, slip and fall claims account for approximately 10% of all tort cases in the United States.

How Professional Snow & Ice Removal Services Can Help

Professional snow removal services provide a number of advantages that increase the safety and well-being of senior living home residents. They have the appropriate skills, knowledge, and equipment to clear ice and snow off walkways, rooftops, parking lots, and entrances, reducing the risk of workers or residents slipping and falling.

They allow homeowners to enjoy moving about freely outside throughout the winter months without danger of slipping and falling by keeping walkways clear of treacherous ice and piled-up snow. They also protect property against snow accumulation on roofs and freeze-thaw cycles on asphalt.

Furthermore, hiring these professionals saves the facility a significant amount of time and money. Instead of having their staff having to sweep the paths in bad weather, they can spend their time caring for the elderly residents. They can also avoid any potential losses or lawsuits that may result from slip and fall incidents.

Special Considerations for Senior Living Centers

When it comes to senior living centers, there are a few special considerations that must be taken into account when looking at snow and ice removal.

Taking into account the needs and limitations of residents

An important detail to be kept in mind when dealing with snow and ice removal are the needs and limitations of the residents. As some of the elderly residents may have mobility issues or rely on walking aids or wheelchairs to get around, ensuring safe accessibility is a top priority.

By removing snow and ice from pathways, parking lots, and entrances, the residents can move around without any obstacles or risks.

Working around the residents' schedule

The top priority is to accommodate the needs of the elderly residents and to keep the disruption of their daily routines to a minimum. To achieve this, good communication and coordination between the facility and the snow removal teams is a must.

By communicating well and having snow and ice clear up promptly, there will be no danger of the residents being exposed to hazardous winter conditions. Furthermore, to accommodate the residents' preferences and prioritizing their comfort and convenience, a flexible scheduling system is the best option.

Making safety a top priority

At senior living centers, making safety a top priority is of utmost importance. Not only should prompt removal of snow and ice be prioritized but safety features such as well-maintained walkways and handrails should be present to provide additional support for seniors. By making safety the top priority it creates peace of mind for both residents and their families alike.

Where All That Water Is Actually Coming From Your backyard stays wet. You've noticed the soggy spots, the mud, maybe some frost heave damage to your patio or fence. You're thinking about French drains. But before you start digging trenches, look up. A huge amount of water hitting your yard isn't coming from rain falling on the lawn. It's coming from your roof. A moderate rainfall on a typical Plymouth home puts hundreds of gallons through your gutter system. Every bit of that water exits through your downspouts. Where it goes from there determines whether you have a drainage problem or not. Then there's your sump pump. Every time it kicks on, it's pushing water out of your basement and into your yard. On a wet property, that pump might run dozens of times a day. All that water has to go somewhere. If your downspouts dump water next to your foundation and your sump pump discharges into a side yard that drains toward your backyard, you're adding water to an already saturated situation. French drains alone might not be enough. You need to manage the sources. The Problem With Surface Discharge Most downspouts in Plymouth end with a splash block or a short extension that dumps water a few feet from the foundation. That's technically moving water away from the house, but not far enough.
