Outdoor Drainage Project

Collecting Water Running Off Driveway

The Drainage Problem

This customer called because water was running down their driveway every time it rained. The water would rush down the driveway and then collect, pool, and puddle in their backyard and the neighbor’s yard. Having a yard that is a soppy mess is something no one wants. Something needed to be changed to let them and their neighbors actually enjoy their property.

Step #1: Outdoor Drainage Consultation

The customer reached out to us at KG Landscape and scheduled an outdoor drainage consolation with Kent, our owner and lead designer. Kent met with the customer at their home to observe the back corner drainage issue in person. While there, he collected the site information needed to provide a detailed plan/estimate for a long term solution to the drainage problem.

Step #2: A Detailed Proposal

After careful consideration of the drainage problem and the options available to correct the issue, a detailed plan was put together to solve the customer’s exterior drainage problems in a cost effective and dependable way.

Drainage Solution Objective: Collect and control the water puddling in the backyard and neighbor’s yard. This will require a deep dry well at the end of the driveway allowing water to collect and saturate the soil at a lower point and not in the yard space.

Below are portions of the proposal used to describe our drainage solutions to the customer:

Dry Well Work:

Install a dry well at the end of the driveway that will measure approximately 20’ long by 2’ wide by 4’ deep. The dry well will be lined on the bottom and sides with filtration fabric and back-filled with river rock. The top of the dry well will be finished with 2-3” rock creating a rock bed look at the surface. This dry well will hold approximately 500 gallons of water that run’s off the driveway while waiting for this water to filter into the adjacent soil. Install new poly edging around the perimeter of the dry well. Remove the 6 yards of soil and haul away and dispose of. Lawn space that’s disturbed around the new dry well during construction will be raked back smooth and seeded with grass seed.

Step #3: Installation of Drainage Solutions

Step #4: Project Completion

The crew thoroughly tested the system by running water through all components when they had completed their work to ensure the system’s success. Both we and the customer were 100% confident the drainage issues have been solved in a high quality and reliably way. We’ve kept in touch with the customer and they have had no more puddling and water retention issues since this work was completed back in 2018.
