Outdoor Drainage Project

Edina House Corner Collecting Water

The Drainage Problem

This customer called because water was collecting in a back corner of the house where a previous owner had installed some AstroTurf. The corner water issues stemmed from a gutter emptying right into this corner. This water issue caused erosion damage to their paver walkway and on the outside of the home. The large volume of water collecting in this corner could lead to much more serious issues for the home down the line. This problem needed to be fixed soon.

Step #1: Outdoor Drainage Consultation

The customer reached out to us at KG Landscape and scheduled an outdoor drainage consolation with Kent, our owner and lead designer. Kent met with the customer at their home to observe the back corner drainage issue in person. While there, he collected the site information needed to provide a detailed plan/estimate for a long term solution to the drainage problem.

Step #2: A Detailed Proposal

After careful consideration of the drainage problem and the options available to correct the issue, a detailed plan was put together to solve the customer’s exterior drainage problems in a cost effective and dependable way.

Drainage Solution Objective: Collect and control the water puddling in the back corner of the house because of the gutter and the elevation change. Run this water through the backyard to an underground dry well where the water will have to space to soak into the ground without disturbing the grass area above. This will require digging up and relaying the paver walkway.

Below are portions of the proposal used to describe our drainage solutions to the customer:

Down Spout Area Drainage Solution: Removal of AstroTurf and removal of 4-6” base rock below the AstroTurf to create a bed that slopes away from the house foundation and into the drain in the center of the bed. This bed will be lined with waterproof poly fabric and will drain into a catch basin placed 6” lower than surrounding elevations in the center of the bed. We will use 1-1/2” gray trap rock to fill in the bed. The West half will appear flat after rock is installed and the East Half will show a slope in the bed toward the drain. Then, installation of underground 4” corrugated pipe non perforated for first 10’ away from the house then changing to perforated pipe with silt sock cover running to the dry well leading through the backyard.

The dry well will be 2’ wide by 25’ long by 4’ deep and lined on all sides with filtration fabric. The dry well will be lined with filtration fabric with (4) lengths of 6” corrugated perforated pipe in the center. We will back fill it with rock from the bottom of the dry well up to the level at which the 4” drain pipe empties into the dry, well likely 18” below grade. Then, the rest of the dry well will be back filled with soil. Grass seed will be raked in to repair spaces disturbed by trenching/dry well installation/and machine access. A section of the paver walkway will need to be removed and reassembled to the get the pipe through, all areas of lawn space that are disturbed will be raked smooth and seeded.

Step #3: Installation of Drainage Solutions

Step #4: Project Completion

The crew thoroughly tested the system by running water through all components when they had completed their work to ensure the system’s success. Both we and the customer were 100% confident the drainage issues have been solved in a high quality and reliably way. We’ve kept in touch with the customer and they have had no more puddling and water retention issues since this work was completed back in 2019.
