Outdoor Drainage Project

This customer called because water would collect and freeze on their front walkway. Especially during winter and spring, this water issue would become dangerous for the homeowners and any visitors. The walkway sunk since it was initially installed many years ago. This causes all the water in the small front yard to drain onto the walkway and collect at the driveway. 

Step # 1: Outdoor Drainage Consultation

The customer reached out to us at KG Landscape and scheduled an outdoor drainage consolation with Kent, our owner and lead designer. Kent met with the customer at their home to observe the backyard hill drainage issue in person. While there, he collected the site information needed to provide a detailed plan/estimate for a long term solution to the drainage problem. 

Step # 2: A Detailed Proposal

After careful consideration of the drainage problem and the options available to correct the issue, a detailed plan was put together to solve the customer’s exterior drainage problems in a cost effective and dependable way.

Drainage Solution Objective: The first step is to raise the walkway by 3-4″ to prevent the water from collecting on it. Then we will grade the yard more effectively to keep water to each side. We will also install a larger channel drain to collect water at the meeting point with the driveway. Finally, we’ll install a french drain to stop water from coming from the right. 

Below are portions of the proposal used to describe our drainage solutions to the customer: 

Landscape Service Description

WALKWAY LIFTING:

The goal of this section is to raise the finished grade of the walkway by 3-4” then taper the walkway elevation back down to the driveway at the far end in order to prevent water from setting on the walkway. Work includes: removal of the existing walkway pavers and the 1” of sand below. Installation of 3-4” of new class 5 base material with leveling and plate compacting. Installation of 1” of new course sand. Re-installation of the existing pavers in the exact same footprint as before. Re-installation of snap edging and stakes along the perimeter. Sweeping in new polymeric sand between the paver seams.

DRAINAGE WORK:

Primary 4” PVC drain pipe is shown below in yellow. A 12” w x 12” deep French drain lined with filtration fabric filled with 2-4” river rock as shown in blue will be lined along the edge with 4” river rock as edging creating a dry creek bed look as shown in blue below. A 4” perforated corrugated pipe with silk sock cover will run down the center of the French drain shown in fuchsia that will collect water and empty into the primary drain pipe shown in yellow below. Then, a 8’ x 4” channel drain will be installed between the driveway and the walkway as shown below in red.

 Step # 4: Project Completion

Once all of the work described in the proposal had been completed and thoroughly tested by running water through all components of the system, both we and the customer were 100% confident the drainage issues have been solved in a high quality and reliably way. We’ve kept in touch with the customer and they have had no walkway issues and no more erosion issues since this work was completed back in 2018.
